How to Use the Stick Drift Tester
Connect your controller, move both thumbsticks once, release them, and start the test. Keep your hands off the controller while the reading is being taken.
Connect Your Controller
You can connect most supported gamepads with:
- A USB cable
- Bluetooth
- A compatible wireless adapter
After connecting it, press a button or move a thumbstick while the page is open.
A browser may not show an already connected gamepad until the user presses a button or moves one of its axes. Firefox also requires controller interaction while the page is visible.
The tool should then display the controller name, mapping status, buttons, and analog axes.
Move Both Thumbsticks Through Their Full Range
Rotate the left and right thumbsticks in a full circle once.
This confirms that:
- Both sticks are detected
- The X-axis and Y-axis respond

You are not measuring drift during this step. You are simply checking that the input is being received.

Center Position
The center is the neutral point where an analog stick should rest when you are not touching it.
The Gamepad API reports controller axes as normalized values from -1 to 1. Values near zero usually represent the center of a standard thumbstick axis.
The reading may not sit at exactly 0.000 every moment. Minor variation can come from sensor tolerance, calibration, the centering mechanism, browser mapping, or normal electrical noise.
X-Axis and Y-Axis

Average Offset
Average offset shows the typical distance from the center during the test.
It stops one brief spike from controlling the whole verdict.
A low average with one short peak may point to a momentary disturbance. A higher average that remains in the same direction is a stronger sign of drift.
Maximum Offset
Maximum offset is the largest unintended movement recorded during the sample.
A large peak may cause a character, menu, vehicle, or camera to move for a moment even when the average reading looks lower.
Repeat the test when one peak appears without any other unusual movement.
Center Jitter
Jitter is quick movement around the resting point.
A drifting stick usually pulls or rests in one main direction. A jittery stick may jump back and forth without settling.
Both can affect gameplay, but they should be reported separately.
Suggested Deadzone
A deadzone is the area around the center where a game ignores controller input.
A game with a larger deadzone may ignore mild unwanted movement. A shooter with a very small deadzone may react to the same controller reading.
A suggested setting is only a starting point. Games use different deadzone scales, sensitivity settings, and response curves.
Test Verdict
The result should use clear labels:
- Stable: No meaningful repeated movement was found during the sample
- Borderline: Some movement appeared, but the result should be repeated
- Drift detected: Unwanted movement appeared repeatedly while the stick was untouched
- Inconclusive: The controller moved, disconnected, or could not be read correctly
A browser result should not label a controller as permanently broken after one short reading.
How Much Stick Drift Is Too Much?
There is no single percentage that is too much for every controller and every game.
The problem becomes noticeable when the unwanted input is larger than the deadzone used by the game. The character, camera, crosshair, menu, or vehicle may then move without a deliberate command.
The same reading may be:
- Hidden in a game with a large deadzone
- Noticeable in a shooter with a low deadzone
- Worse after increasing sensitivity
- Less visible after raising the deadzone
- More obvious on the right stick during aiming
Do not rely only on a green or red score. Compare the reading with what happens in the games you play.
Should an Analog Stick Return to Exactly Zero?
Not always.
A centered 0.000 reading looks good, but a small non-zero number does not automatically prove that the controller has a hardware fault.
Look for a reading that:
- Remains away from the center
- Repeats in the same direction
- Continues for several seconds
- Appears across several tests
- Causes movement inside a game
- Gets worse over time
That pattern tells you more than one isolated value.
Is 5% Stick Drift Bad?
It depends on the game, the controller, and how the percentage was calculated.
One tool may show the largest movement on a single axis. Another may combine the X and Y values. A third may average several hundred readings.
This is why two websites can report different percentages for the same gamepad.
