We test every controller guide on PadProTools using real hardware and our own browser-based testing tools, not just manufacturer specs. Our current testing setup includes PS5, PS4, Xbox 360, and the latest Xbox controller connected via PC. Each controller is checked for roughly 20 minutes per session, covering stick drift, deadzone accuracy, button response, and vibration, using both our own testers and real gameplay in titles like FC 26 and Cricket 26.
Our Testing Equipment
We test controllers using the hardware we actually own and use:
- PlayStation 5 DualSense controller testing
- PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller testing
- Xbox 360 legacy controller testing
- Latest Xbox Controller (PC-connected)tested via PC rather than an Xbox Series X/S console
- PC used to run our browser-based testing tools (Stick Drift Tester, Deadzone Tester, Button Tester, Vibration Tester) and to test controllers in real games
We’re upfront about the limits of this setup. We do not currently own an Xbox Series X/S console or a Nintendo Switch. Where our guides cover these platforms, we verify every detail against official manufacturer documentation and the W3C Gamepad specification to keep the information accurate, even without direct console access.
How We Test
Stick Drift & Deadzone
We connect each controller to PC and run it through our own Stick Drift Tester and Deadzone Tester, checking resting offset, jitter, and directional pull over multiple sessions. We cross-check readings between USB and Bluetooth where both connection types are supported.
Button & Trigger Response
Every button and trigger is tested individually through our Button Tester, then confirmed again in-game to catch any input lag or missed presses that a browser test alone might not reveal.
Vibration & Haptics
We run our Vibration Tester to check strong, weak, and combined rumble, then confirm the result feels consistent during actual gameplay.
Real-Game Verification
Browser tools tell us what the input data looks like. Games tell us what it feels like. We play each tested controller in titles like FC 26 and Cricket 26 to confirm that what we’re seeing in our testers matches real, in-game behavior.
Typical Testing Time
Each controller check takes roughly 20 minutes per session, covering all major inputs. Controllers with reported issues, like drift complaints from readers, may be tested across multiple sessions to confirm the problem is consistent and not a one-off reading.
How Often We Recheck Guides
Controller hardware and platform software both change over time. We revisit and update our guides when:
- A new controller model or firmware update is released
- A reader reports something that doesn’t match our guide
- Manufacturer troubleshooting steps change
- We get access to new hardware to test with
Each guide displays a “Last reviewed” date so you know how current the information is.
What We’re Honest About
A browser-based test can tell you a lot: resting offset, jitter, missed inputs. But it can’t open up a controller and diagnose a failed part. Across our guides, we’re clear about:
- What our tests can confirm vs. what they can’t
- Which platforms we’ve tested on hands-on vs. verified through official documentation
- When a result should be treated as a starting point, not a final diagnosis
